It seems that for fans of A Rocket to the Moon, Greetings From... puts forth a very different sound. All music put out before was either acoustic or electronic-acoustic. The mood and sound of Greetings From... is stronger, utilising more electric guitar and full band performance. Nick Santino’s writing style remains the same, as do his vocals. The sound is an easy one to grasp, as well. The lyrical style stays focused on love and happiness, as was Summer ’07 EP.
"If Only They Knew" starts off with a good hook and carries an easy riff. It is definitely an easy song to listen to, in keeping with Santino’s primary goal in song writing. Though the song is short, it’s rather catchy, another great feel-good song from A Rocket to the Moon.
Easily the hit of the EP, "Dakota" is also a very good song that demonstrates what great change A Rocket to the Moon has had, and the positive effects of a full band tacked onto Santino’s pleasing vocals and guitar. The theme of love seems to show up in most songs, and it creates the sweetest songs. "Dakota" will make you want to sing along, fall in love, write your own love song, etc. This is definitely a great must-have.
"I’m Not Saying Goodbye"s intro pays homage to the old days of A Rocket to the Moon, and the upbeat tempo of the rest of the sing is reminiscent of The Rocket Summer, yet not totally Mr. Avary’s style. Santino alternates between slow and fast tempo to create a really beautiful love song. It’s all potential for smiles and hugs, lyrics to make you want more from A Rocket to the Moon.
"Fear of Flying" is familiar for old A Rocket to the Moon fans, as Santino posted the original song on the band’s MySpace. The new revised version of the song is about a minute shorter, but in no way worse. If nothing, the addition of drums and more guitar gives power to one of the most powerful confessions from A Rocket to the Moon. If you like this song, I highly suggest looking online for the acoustic version, which is longer and the acoustics give more tone to Santino’s vocals.
The piano introduction sweetens the vocals before the eventual guitar addition, but the almost shouted chorus of the song gives "Just Another One" a little power. Always dramatic is the shouting over drums and sans guitar, especially with the lyrics. For the first time on the EP, and the last song too, Santino sings not about being happy in love but the mysteries of girls, of misunderstanding. In a classic ending, the band breaks a pause of silence by singing out the ba-das of Dakota over piano.
Overall, this latest EP from A Rocket to the Moon is definitely good. Full of sweet sings and melodic hooks, Greetings From... is an easy listen and has an appealing sound. My only complaint would be its length, as the band really needs to be putting out a full-length album, allowing their fans more over their music. Thank God they’re in the process of writing! Santino and the rest of the gang pulled together a sweet and yet bold album, once again keeping fans hooked while reeling more in. Greetings From... should be in the music collection of everyone out there who enjoys being in love, or just appreciates really good pop-punk music.
